CHICKPEAS
OR GARBANZO BEANS:
I recently posted an easy hummus recipe in this newsletter that I have made
many times since then. Maybe too many because when Atlanta
Journal-Constitution food columnist John Kessler wrote about falafel in his
January 31, 2008 column, I was interested, meaning I'd like to know other ways
to use chickpeas, though I still love the hummus.
The first link below will take you to information about ch9ck-peas (garbanzo
bens). The second link comes from the first one and it explains falafel.

The Recipezaar web address below has many chickpea recipes including Falafel,
Mock Tuna Salad (Chickpea Salad) and Sweet Potato Curry with Spinach and
Chickpeas.

SERIOUS
EATS:
In the Food and Drink section of today's [February 21, 2008] Atlanta Jourrnal-Constitution,
food columnist John Kessler writes about a web site with a lot of food
information.
"Serious Eats (www.seriouseats.com) brings a daily smorgasbord of links,
recipes, videos, reviews and thoughtful exploration of all things
related to food."
This is not a vegetarian web site. However, there is information that
might be of interest to vegetarians.

FRUIT
BY ANOTHER NAME:
I was looking at a long list of fruit and vegetables and saw names I didn't
know. Here are some:
carambola - "When cut crosswise, this showy fruit has a
striking star shape. That's why we call it starfruit."
sapote - A tropical fruit...the sapote is plum-shaped and
about the size of a small orange."
pomelo - "This giant citrus fruit is native to Malaysia
(where it still grows abundantly) and thought to be ancestor to the
grapefruit."
The above definitions come from the Epicurious food dictionary. There
are also recipes at this web address:
http://www.epicurious.com/tools/fooddictionary
canistel - "1. A tree (Pouteria campechiana), native to
Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean and having very sweet oval fruit
with a musky odor.
2. The fruit of this tree."
[American Spanish, from dialectal variant of Spanish canastillo, small basket,
from Latin canistellum, diminutive of canistrum, basket; see canister.]
